Todos os anos, principalmente durante a época estival, o elevado número de incêndios florestais e a grande dimensão da área ardida confirmam a dimensão deste problema, com consequências muito negativas. Não só devido à perda de recursos florestais, mas também pelos impactes nos domínios sociais e económicos. Impactes que assumem hoje especial relevância em áreas transição ou mistas, no fundo, em espaços onde coexistem ocupações mistas do território, ou seja, onde há disponibilidade de combustíveis tanto de origem natural como antrópica. Estas áreas, em Portugal, são tecnicamente designadas como Interface Urbano-Florestal (IUF). As dinâmicas registadas ao nível do uso do solo, tanto de abandono, registado nos espaços rurais, como de expansão urbana difusa associada à periferia dos espaços urbanos, tem contribuído não só para o aumento do risco de incêndio nestas áreas, como também para o aumento de perdas económicas decorrentes da manifestação do risco de incêndio.As áreas de IUF, pelas suas características, assumem-se como territórios críticos ao nível do planeamento, gestão de combustíveis, fiscalização e vigilância. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho pretende contribuir para melhorar o conhecimento sobre o risco de incêndio em áreas de IUF na Região Centro. Para tal, além de uma caracterização das interfaces urbano-florestais nos municípios que compõem a Região Centro de Portugal, procurando identificar os tipos de contacto mais comuns com outras classes de uso do solo, será realizada uma avaliação do risco de incêndio nestas áreas, combinando informação produzida a diferentes escalas. Esta estratégia permitirá suportar uma análise à escala regional, municipal e ainda à escala da interface urbano-florestal, contribuindo para identificar as áreas onde devem ser implementadas medidas específicas visando a diminuição da sua vulnerabilidade e do risco associado e, assim, evitar possíveis crises.Forest fires are one of the most sensitive problems in Portugal. Every year, especially during the summer season, the high number of forest fires and the large size of the burned area confirm the scale of this problem, with very negative consequences. Not only because of the loss of forest resources, but also because of the social and economic impacts. Impacts that assume today special relevance in transition or mixed areas, in other words, in spaces where mixed occupations of the territory coexist, that is, where there is availability of fuels of both natural and anthropic origin. These areas are technically designated as Wildland Urban-Interface (WUI). The dynamics registered in terms of land use, both of abandonment, recorded in rural areas and of diffuse urban sprawl associated with the periphery of urban spaces, have contributed not only to the increased fire risk in these areas, but also to the increase in economic losses resulting from the manifestation of the fire risk. The areas of WUI, due to their characteristics, are assumed as critical territories in terms of planning, fuel management and surveillance. In this context, the present work aims to contribute to improve the knowledge about the fire risk in areas of WUI in the Central Region. For such, in addition to a characterization of wildland urban interfaces in the municipalities that make up the Central Region of Portugal, seeking to identify the most common types of contact with other classes of land use, an assessment of the fire risk in these areas will be carried out, combining information produced at different scales.
