Resumo: During the 1840’s, a new genre appeared in Portuguese theatre. It was called «lyrical farce», and it was largely infl uenced by the French comic opera that was very much performed on the Lisbon stages. It was believed that this new genre would give birth to the future Portuguese opera. In this paper we will present this new form of original Portuguese lyrical composition for theatre.
