Resumo: The main concern of this century is managing and preserving the natural resources with a technological and institutional orientation such that the human needs for present and future generations are satisfied. In this work, a short overview of aquaculture and its related terminologies are given. Furthermore, a short summary will give insights into the historical relevance of aquaculture and how financial investments on low trophic levels can promote economic sustainability. The potential of microalgae will be analyzed, with the aim to get an overview of their market applications, which are promising because of their health aspects, e.g., the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids. On the market the main polyunsaturated fatty acids from microalgae are Linoleic Acid, Alpha-Linolelic Acid, Arachidonic Acid, Eicosapentaenoic Acid, Docosahexaenoic Acid. According to an analysis, these groups present a similar patent market with growth potential. Currently, higher use of microalgae as feedstock for several industries is observerd in countries the northern hemisphere in comparison to those in the Southern hemisphere. However, countries from the Southern hemisphere, for instance, Brazil, have shown a hotspot for this market due to its biodiversity richness and environmental conditions favorable for microalgae cultivation. Here it was found that both of them have not been fully explored yet by market companies.
