O Sistema Estomatognático (SE), anteriormente conhecido como sistema mastigatório, é uma unidade fisiológica complexa, funcional e definida. Esse sistema tem um funcionamento coordenado e atua tanto durante a mastigação quanto durante outros processos como a oclusão, a deglutição, a respiração e a postura. A oclusão, função pertencente ao SE, atua no momento em que a arcada dentaria está em contacto com a arcada antagonista. Outras estruturas como o periodonto, a Articulação Temporomandibular (ATM) e os músculos mastigatórios também fazem parte do SE e estão ligados diretamente à oclusão. Essas estruturas se completam, o que interfere no funcionamento desse sistema. Os estudos dos autores elencados para esta dissertação revelam que a afinidade entre a oclusão dentária e a postura do crânio e do corpo é investigada desde a década de 1990, e as conclusões são controversas. Em alguns estudos, sugerem-se correlações positivas entre a dimensão vertical oclusal e a postura do crânio e, noutros, não há correspondência entre a oclusão dentária e a postura do corpo. Entretanto, embora algumas revisões tenham feito avaliação comparativa a favor e contra a relação entre oclusão dentária e postura, as aplicações clínicas dessa relação, ainda, são questionáveis e necessitam de mais estudos.In this dissertation, based on a qualitative methodology, a bibliographic review study was developed with the objective of understanding how occlusion can influence an individual's body posture. The stomatognathic system (SE), formerly known as the masticatory system, is a fully delimited physiological and useful unit. This system has a coordinated functioning and acts both during mastication and during other activities, such as occlusion, swallowing, breathing and posture. Occlusion, a function belonging to the SE, is the proper relationship of the teeth when the dental arch comes into contact with the antagonistic arch, being one of the elements of the stomatognathic system, which also includes the periodontium, the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and the muscles of the jaw. chewing. These different elements overlap, which conditions the functioning of the entire system and, as such, the failure of one can affect all the others. Posture, also being one of the branches of SE, is defined as an ideal body position where an individual holds the body in an upright position, sitting or lying down or working so that the spine remains neutral. If the spine is neutral, it is called good posture. This work aims to describe, through a narrative dissertation, how occlusion can influence an individual's body posture. The studies of the listed authors for this research reveal that the affinity between dental occlusion and the posture of the skull and body has been investigated since the 1990s, the conclusions are controversial. Some studies find positive correlations between occlusal vertical dimension and skull posture and in other studies no correlation between dental occlusion and body posture is demonstrated.
