Resumo: The theme of this dissertation arose from the need to develop an investigation about the superficiality into which contemporary architecture seems to tend, trying to identify the principles on which consistent architecture bases and founds. In times when daily life bombards us constantly with images, architectural thought many times limits itself to the imagetic exclusive and strict dimension or mainly sculptural, unlinked from the cultural context in which it inserts, subalterning present values and culture. In such a background, Rafael Moneo's work emerges as a case of model study, for it founds in a work rich in values and meanings, based on a vast culture, which he deepens and enriches. With this dissertation, it was intended to put in evidence the written and built work of two authors who we consider particularly relevant in architectonic thought - John Ruskin and Rafael Moneo -, in the way in which they propose us and follow a knowledge of architecture based on the respect for the present context e history values, exploring continuities with the past without being revolutionary in each one's own time. Rafael Moneo's work will work as central axis of that demand, once it's an example of consistent and pertinent architecture. The investigation and consequent reflexion which was produced were organized according to the structure which is the basis of the John Ruskin's book, The seven lamps of architecture, for the fact that the covered topics have surprisingly proved to be valid and pertinent, and for defining a lecture array, capable of clarifying the principles which determine the pertinence, quality and consistency of an architectonic work, anytime or anywhere. According to the named reflexion structure, the present work was organized in ten chapters. In the first one the theme is introduced, contextualizing it in the contemporary architecture theory, so justifying its relevance. Yet in this chapter, in a second part, a conceptual structure of the dissertation is presented, to clarify the relation between the several parts which compose it. In the second chapter, one tries to identify and let know the different historical and cultural contexts which background John Ruskin's (XIX century) and Rafael Moneo's (XX century) thought and production, which justify a particular way of seeing, thinking and doing architecture. The next seven chapters will correspond to which one of the seven lamps of architecture of John Ruskin - namely, Sacrifice, Truth, Beauty, Power, Life, Memory and Obedience -, from which will be made and transversal analysis to his work, knowing the principles and themes named by each one of them. At last, we conclude the developed investigation work and the present thesis highlighting a set of principles which we consider essentials to the feasibility of a consistent architecture, able to react to fragilities of its practice in contemporaneity. Namely, the several components present in the project conception project - such as materiality, interior spatiality and exterior shape - to the specificity of each program required, avoiding pre-established styles; the statement and coordination between shape, technic and semantics; the establishment of a conceptual dialogue, conquered through abstraction of the perceived natural qualities, and also physical between building and nature; the handling of colour and proportion in the project design; the reinsertion of handcraft in the building execution as main part of its architectonic quality; the establishment of a dialogue with the precedent constructions from the deep knowledge of architecture's history - raging from classical antiquity treatises to the vernacular principles -, as well as the considering for the building's role in long term; lastly, the respect for the specific place in which it inserts, looking for a territory intervention, eventually, incisive, but responsible.
