How to help students work more efficiently in groups

Resumo: The present study focuses on the use of group work among young learners of English at a primary school in Lisbon and examines its efficiency. The research presents the teachers’ and learners’ attitudes towards group work, considers different group formations and studies the importance of following group rules. Moreover, it examines the effectiveness of instructions during group work. The study involved the use of questionnaires for sixteen learners and twenty teachers, observations of learners, and teachers, learners’ self-assessment, observation grids and a learning journal. As the study was implemented, my approach to group work changed considerably. Results show that group work can be of great importance for young learners to achieve and obtain better results when working together, creating a friendly atmosphere in which they freely express themselves in English.

A pesquisa apresenta as atitudes dos professores e dos alunos em relação ao trabalho em grupo, considera diferentes formações grupais e estuda a necessidade de seguir as regras do trabalho em grupo. Além disso, examina a eficácia das instruções durante o trabalho em grupo. O estudo envolveu o uso de questionários para dezesseis alunos e vinte professores, observações dos mesmos, auto-avaliação dos alunos, grelhas de observação e um jornal de aprendizagem. À medida que o estudo foi implementado, a abordagem ao trabalho em grupo mudou consideravelmente.
