A literatura sugere que o estabelecimento de comparações sociais desfavoráveis baseadas na aparência física dos pares (i.e., a perceção de uma posição social inferior) está associada a indicadores psicopatológicos, tais como sintomatologia ansiosa e depressiva e psicopatologia alimentar. Por outro lado, alguns estudos identificaram a flexibilidade psicológica da imagem corporal e a apreço corporal como fatores cruciais para a mudança terapêutica, dada a sua associação com o bem-estar psicológico.O presente estudo procurou estabelecer uma ponte entre a comparação social baseada na aparência física dos pares e os indicadores psicopatológicos, e perceber de que forma é que a flexibilidade psicológica da imagem corporal e a apreço corporal podem mediar esta relação, numa amostra da população geral. Quatrocentas e sessenta e duas mulheres entre 18 e 60 anos de idade completaram uma versão online das medidas de autorrelato. Os resultados da path analysis revelaram uma boa adequação aos dados empíricos e explicaram 25% e 45% da variância da psicopatologia geral e alimentar, respetivamente. Adicionalmente, a comparação social desfavorável baseada na aparência física dos pares mostrou-se associada a ambos os indicadores psicopatológicos, com a flexibilidade psicológica da imagem corporal e a apreço corporal a desempenharem um papel mediador importante nesta relação. Estes resultados têm contributos significativos para a investigação e para a prática clínica, sublinhando a importância de promover capacidades de flexibilidade psicológica relacionadas com a imagem corporal e de aceitação e respeito pelo corpo mesmo perante a insatisfação, sobretudo numa sociedade em que estas comparações sociais são cada vez mais prevalentes.Physical appearance-based social comparison refers to the process of evaluating one's social attractiveness and rank, using physical appearance as a reference. Literature has suggested that unfavorable physical appearance-based social comparison with peers (i.e., perceived low social rank) are associated with psychopathological indicators, such as anxiety and depression symptoms and eating psychopathology. On the other hand, some studies have identified body image psychological flexibility and body appreciation as crucial factors for therapeutic change given their association with psychological well-being. The present study intended to build a bridge between physical appearance-based social comparison with peers and psychopathology indicators, and how body image psychological flexibility and body appreciation might mediate this relationship, in a sample of the general population. Four hundred and sixty-two females aged between 18 and 60 years old completed an online version of self-report measures.Path analysis’s results revealed a good fit to the empirical data and explained 25% and 45% of general and eating psychopathology variance, respectively. The findings also showed that unfavorable physical appearance-based social comparison with peers was associated with both psychopathological indicators, with body image psychological flexibility and body appreciation playing an important mediating role in this relationship.
