Resumo: | The word 'compromise' is a common-place for all the groups that build up our architectural community. From activists to starchitects, from theoreticians to technocratic bureaucrats, all are keen to mobilize 'compromise' to their ends. This term introduces a certain aura of appeasement, compelling in itself to both allow for the aspirations of some and relieve the indignations of others. The idea of compromise is in crisis since this aura of ambiguity renders it useless in a debate. As an outcome of a process of negotiations between different parts, any result is able to be called a compromise nowadays. In an argument, the part achieving the largest number of goals is said to have enforced its authority. The architect is negotiatior of this shock of authorities, providing hierarchies through the project - whether he realizes it or not. The understanding of how these authorities are mobilized entails the investigation on the origins of this type of power in architecture (II. Authority and the Narratives - Autoridade e as Narrativas), the manner in which it is passed on through time (III. Authority and Tradition - Autoridade e Tradição) as well as the role of the clear estrangement of areas of knowledge in its maintenance (IV. Authority and the Modern Constitution - Autoridade e Constituição Moderna). The separation of authority form the idea of author (V. Authority and Author - Autoridade e Autor) provides a synthesis of this problem in the creation process, enabling us to scrutinize events under the standpoint of compromise. These are organized under a Personal Map of Transgressions (Mapa Pessoal de Transgressões). The Porto Bourgeois House is the fallout of a liberal tradition with several centuries of experiences. In recent years, it has been the target of a kind of re-appropriation based on the economic miracle of tourism - a phenomena the city is still going trough. The project of refurbishment of one of these houses will be our guide in this itinerary. This dissertation has one disproportional (and rather naïve) ambition: retrieving compromise for a practical debate in architecture, distinguishing it from its current misty aura. The cast of instruments our new compromise provides assemble a logic of approach towards circumstance through design. |
