Alguns deles foram treinados como operadores de câmara, para assim registar as atrocidades que lá encontrassem. Deste modo pretendia-se que a imagem fílmica fosse utilizada como registo histórico e como propaganda anti-nazi. Com estes registos, o Ministério da Informação (Ministry of Information (MOI))pretendia fazer uma longa-metragem,que documentasse os crimes cometidos pelo regime nazi. Todavia, os Comandantes dos Aliados queriam apenas uma curta-metragem, de 20 ou 30 minutos, que servisse o propósito de propaganda anti-nazi. Por causa deste desentendimento e outras razões, o filme acabou por ficar arquivado sem ser terminado no Imperial War Museum de Londres, até que foi finalmente montado e posteriormente exibido em 2014. A partir da análise da longa-metragem completa "German Concentration Camps Factual Survey" e das curtas-metragens "Death Mills" e "Nuit et brouillard", irei analisar o contributo de cada uma das três obras na criação de uma memória colectiva, ao mesmo tempo reflectindo sobre a importância da imagem fílmica como documento factual. Em primeiro lugar, irei debruçar-me sobre "German Concentration Camps Factual Survey", que, basicamente, abriu o caminho para os outros dois filmes, já que algumas das imagens da libertação dos campos, filmadas pelos operadores de câmara, surgem nas outras duas obras. O que me leva ao segundo capítulo, no qual falarei do método de compilação utilizado na curta-metragem "Death Mills", o primeiro registo fílmico a ser exibido após o término da guerra, e que revelou ao mundo as barbáries cometidas pelo regime. Por último, chego a "Nuit et brouillard", a obra que mais se distancia das outras duas pela sua vertente ensaística e lírica, mesmo que se sirva também de algumas das imagens filmadas pelos Aliados.Qual é a importância de manter viva esta memória? Partindo da análise destes três filmes, e estabelecendo um diálogo com a obra do escritor e sobrevivente italiano Primo Levi, proponho-me a descobrir a possibilidade do cinema como criação de uma memória.In 1945 the Allies liberated the concentration camps built during Adolf Hitler's nazi regime. Some of them were trained as cameramen, in order to record the atrocities they'd find, whilst liberating the camps. This way film was being used as a historical record and as anti-nazi propaganda. The british Ministry of Information (MOI) wanted to use this footage to make a feature-length film, which would depict the crimes committed during the nazi regime. However the Allied Command wanted just a short film of 20 to 30 minutes, which would serve as anti-nazi propaganda. The film ended up being stored unfinished in London’s Imperial War Museum, due to this disagreement and other reasons, until it finally got assembled and shown to the public in 2014. Through an analysis of the feature length-film "German Concentration Camps" and the short films "Death Mills" and "Nuit et brouillard", I'll try to figure out how these three pieces create a collective memory, all the while reflecting on the importance of the moving image as a factual document. First i’ll get to "German Concentration Camps Factual Survey", the film which basically led the way to the other two films, given the fact that some of the Liberation footage shot by the Allied cameramen was used in both of the films. This leads me to the second chapter, where I go through "Death Mill"’s method of compiling barbaric images, being the first film record about the camps to be shown to the public after the war and to reveal the nazi horrors. Finally I get to "Nuit et brouillard", the most different work of all three, due to its lyrical and essay-like way of portraying this historical event, even if it also uses some of the Allied footage.Why does it matter to keep this memory alive?
