Resumo: The human figure has always been an object of representation in art. Whether you talk about illustration or painting, the portrayal of mythological entities, celestial or demonical creatures and beings that are created within the human mind, personification is frequently connected to those images. Humans need to constantly see themselves within art pieces that they come into contact with, so that a relationship can be created, which will lead to conclusions and theories not only about the art itself, but also about the people that interact with it. These conclusions are linked to each person’s community, culture and education, facts that contribute to different interpretations and conclusions. Even though there may be a lot of differences in what each person gets from their relationship with the art piece, the human figure is always the foundation in illustrations created through personification, and that creates an opening for a connection to be made. The definition of personification is wide due to the fact that it not only applies to illustration and painting, but also to domains such as sculpture and literature. However, as wide as it may be, it follows specific qualities for each concept, idea or creature that it is applied to. Besides the history about the representation of the imaginary, we will study concepts of the western culture and we will look over the work and craft of contemporary illustrators, among which are Ken Wong, Rovina Cai, Toby Allen and Kim Myatt, who look at personification through different types of glasses, some in an ethereal way, others in a cheerful and colourful way, and even some in a sorrowful and grotesque manner. Italo Calvino, one of the masters of the Italian literature, in his book The Invisible Cities describes in a detailed and almost poetic way fifty-five cities visited by Marco Polo, in a conversation with Kublai Khan. From his work, symbols and lifestyles will be interpreted so that it is possible to idealize and illustrate fifty-five feminine characters through personification, in order to achieve this project’s goals in a successful manner
