Resumo: Introduction: The nursing profession, particularly in intensive care, entails high physical and psychological stress, which affects the quality and safety of care. In order to map the scientific evidence on this topic, the following research question was established: “Is patient safety influenced by burnout experienced by nurses working in intensive care units?” Aim: Identify the causes of burnout in nurses working in Intensive Care Units (ICUs); identify the repercussions of burnout on patient safety; and identify minimising/preventive strategies against burnout. Materials and Methods: Integrative literature review using databases. The research took place on January 24, 2021, using EBSCOhost Web, B-on and Google Academic. Results: Six scientific productions were selected that showed the causes, implications of burnout in patient safety in ICUs and minimizing/preventive burnout strategies. Conclusion: The analysis of the selected articles reveals the existence of various causes of burnout and association between the same and patient safety in ICUs. Planning strategies and developing a safety culture focused on the patient and on nurses are essential to promote safe care.
