Nesta sequ?ncia foi desenvolvido o programa F.I.R.E. ? / Several studies confirm that volunteer firefighters and others professionals involved in emergency medical and rescue operations are exposed to stress-inducing situations, which causes an increased risk of developing different psychological disorders (e.g., Paulus, Gallagher, Bartlett, Tran & Vujanovic, 2018; Stanley, Boffa, Hom, Kimbrel & Joiner, 2017; Ferreira, 2013). Considering the growing recognition of the 3rd wave cognitive-behavioral therapies as effective approaches in different clinical conditions and professional groups, the development of a mindfulness and compassion based program for volunteer firefighters was considered relevant. Thus, besides a literature review and with the aim of collecting more specific information from the target population, a focus group was prepared and carried out, integrating 8 elements of the Bombeiros Volunt?rios de Maceira. The program F.I.R.E. ? Fighters with Focus, Intention, Regulation and Engagement was developed, being, to our knowledge, the first mindfulness and compassion based program specifically targeting firefighters. This program structure and contents were defined based on other group intervention programs (e.g., RAW; Joyce, Shand, Bryant, Lal & Harvey, 2016) grounded on mindfulness (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction; Kabat-Zin, 1982; 2006; 2016) and compassion (Compassion Focused Therapy; Gilbert, 2010) practices, components of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Hayes, Luoma, Bond, Masuda & Lillis, 2006) and results from the focus group. The F.I.R.E. program comprises 8 weekly sessions, of approximately 2 hours each. It is proposed that the sessions encompass mindfulness and compassion practices, several themes addressed in a psychoeducation perspective and exercises or group discussions. Furthermore, the experiential nature of the sessions is emphasized as well as the mindfulness and compassion practice between the sessions. |
