However, mystery still envelops its sudden rupture with the Communist International in June of 1922. Within much of the historical literature, the split with the Comintern was an epiphany, brought about by the in-flow of worrisome reports about the authoritarianism of the Soviet regime. Using new sources, this article revisits this interpretation.
