Between Scylla and Charybdis: Margaret Archer’s social realism

Resumo: This article aims to compare Archer’s theoretical proposals with those of Giddens or, more precisely, to read Giddens through Archer and vice versa, in a deliberate dialogical attempt that never reaches — and never tries to reach — a synthesis. It is intended, through this comparison, to cast light on certain logical articulations between the two paradigms that may delineate the strengths and weaknesses of social realism as conceived by Archer. For this reason, we put forward three vectors of analysis, through which to set the two approaches against each other: the ontological, systemic and actionalist axes. We conclude by suggesting that certain key proposals in the theory of structuration cannot be neglected, on pain of a theory of morphogenesis falling into a spurious internalism that runs the risk of slipping towards a reductive vision of the articulation between personal emerging capacities and structural emerging properties.

We conclude by suggesting that certain key proposals in the theory of structuration cannot be neglected, on pain of a theory of morphogenesis falling into a spurious internalism that runs the risk of slipping towards a reductive vision of the articulation between personal emerging capacities and structural emerging properties.En este artículo se pretende confrontar las propuestas teóricas de Archer con las de Giddens; o es mejor decir, leer a Giddens a través de Archer y viceversa, en un asumido intento dialógico que nunca llega — nipretende — a una síntesis. A través de esta confrontación se pretende iluminar algunas articulaciones lógicas entre los dos paradigmas que puedan delinear las fortalezas y debilidades del realismo social en laconcepción planteada por Archer. En este sentido, proponemos tres vectores de análisis a través de los cuales se puedan cotejar los dos abordajes: el eje ontológico, el eje sistémico y el eje accionalista. Concluimossugiriendo que algunas propuestas centrales de la teoría de la estructuración no pueden ser negligenciadas para que la teoría de la morfogénesis no sufra de un internalismo estéril que se arriesga a derivar haciauna visión reduccionista de la articulación entre capacidades emergentes personales y propiedades emergentes estructurales.Cet article confronte les propositions théoriques d’Archer à celles de Giddens (ou, plutôt, on lit Giddens à travers Archer et vice-versa), dans une tentative dialogique assumée qui n’aboutit jamais à une synthèse— ce n’est d’ailleurs pas son objectif. Cette confrontation vise à éclairer quelques articulations logiques entre les deux paradigmes susceptibles de déceler les forces et les faiblesses du réalisme social dans laconception défendue par Archer. Dans ce sens, nous proposons trois vecteurs d’analyse afin de comparer les deux approches : l’axe ontologique, l’axe systémique et l’axe actionnaliste. Nous concluons ensuggérant que certaines propositions centrales de la théorie de la structuration ne sauraient être négligées, sous peine de plonger la théorie de la morphogenèse dans un internalisme dénaturé qui court le risque de glisser vers une vision réductrice de l’articulation entre capacités émergentes personnelles et propriétés émergentes structurelles.Neste artigo pretende-se confrontar as propostas teóricas de Archer com as de Giddens; ou, melhor dizendo, ler Giddens através de Archer e vice-versa, numa assumida tentativa dialógica que nunca chega — nem pretende — a uma síntese. Procura-se através desta confrontação iluminar algumas articulações lógicas entre os dois paradigmas, que possam delinear as forças e fraquezas do realismo social na concepção advogada por Archer. Neste sentido, propomos três vectores de análise através dos quais cotejar as duas abordagens: o eixo ontológico, o eixo sistémico e o eixo accionalista.
