Resumo: The critic review by Octavio Paz on his 1950 essay El laberinto de la soledad is reflected on the narrative work of Carlos Fuentes, specifically in what concerns one of the best defining aspects of the essence of the Mexican being: the death living experience. The essay of Octavio Paz is a fundamental piece to understand Fuentess critic on the postulates of a paternalist nationalism that praised the whole pre-hispanic per se. That major question on the Mexican being has turned into an ambitious literary project which lead the 1987 Cervantes Prize into a journey to the national past so as to understand both the present and the Mexican identity.
