Resumo: | (Em desenvolvimento) Palliative care has been receiving increasing attention in Portugal as the population ages and the need for end-of-life care rises. This article aims to analyze palliative care in Portugal, focusing on community support measures, and make a comparison with the Dutch Model. In recent years, various community support projects have been implemented in Portugal in the field of palliative care. These measures aim to provide holistic and multidisciplinary care to patients, as well as support to their families and caregivers. Among the implemented actions, the creation of home care teams, the expansion of pediatric palliative care, and the promotion of specialized training in this area stand out. Additionally, strategies have been developed to integrate palliative care with primary healthcare, with the objective of ensuring a comprehensive and continuous approach. For the purpose of comparison, the Dutch Model of palliative care is often cited as an international reference. The Netherlands has a well-established palliative care system with extensive coverage and access to specialized assistance in all stages of terminal illness. The Dutch approach emphasizes patient autonomy and active participation in decision-making, as well as prioritizing quality of life and symptom relief. In comparison, Portugal still faces some challenges in terms of availability and access to specialized palliative care services, although it is progressively advancing in the development of support structures. Throughout the article, an overview of palliative care in Portugal will be provided, highlighting the implemented community support measures and comparing them with the Dutch Model. Similarities and significant differences will be highlighted, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement in the Portuguese system in order to enhance the quality of life for patients in palliative care and their families, as well as strengthen the community support network. Specific challenges faced by Portugal, such as unequal distribution of services and the need for greater financial investment, will also be discussed. It is expected that this study will provide a comprehensive overview of community support measures related to palliative care in Portugal, as well as valuable insights through the comparison of the two models. Therefore, it is hoped that this analysis can contribute to improving the provision of palliative care in Portugal, ensuring that patients receive quality care at the end of life. |
