ABSTRACT: Since its deployment, P2P-TV has already attracted millions of users. It is known that this technology has several advantages although it still presents some drawbacks when compared to traditional TV. The possibility of having access anywhere to television services with a high diversity of channels, relying only on a computer and a wideband Internet connection, is the rationale behind the creation of this technology, allowing someone that is temporarily away of his geographical residence area to access the TV channels he is used to at his home without the need for a TV set, cables or any satellite receivers. It is expected that P2P-TV applications will grow exponentially in the near future, both in terms of the number and diversity of their clients. The motivation for this dissertation came from the need of knowing better the way P2P-TV applications work and who are their users nowadays. There is very few information on how these systems work, mainly due to the fact that their design is proprietary and, this, is not accessible to the public. It is very important to anticipate or predict the impact that this technology will have on the network due to their global and growing level of utilization. The main purpose of this dissertation was to study the protocols of three of the most popular P2P-TV applications that are currently used in Europe, statistically characterizing the associated traffic, identifying the contents’ preferences and characterizing the P2P-TV contacted users regarding their behavior and geographic location. During the execution of this dissertation, I also tried to contribute to a better understanding of the challenges of P2P-TV systems, particularly regarding the comprehension/identification of the lacks of this technology, in a way that can help in future updates and corrections that these applications will certainly be submitted to. |
