Resumo: The majority of instruments used to evaluate the quality of life of oncologic patients do not include spirituality as a domain. However several researches have shown that spiritual well -being can be important for people with oncologic disease, mostly for the ones at end -of -life stage. This study aims to validate the Functional Assessment of Chronic ILLness Therapy -Spiritual Well -Being (FACIT -Sp -12) of Peterman et al to the Portuguese culture and to end -of -life patients accompanied in palliative care units. This instrument comprises 12 itens grouped in 2 domains/subscales: Meaning/Peace and Faith. The questionnaire survey, already translated to Portuguese by the Functional Assessment of Chronic ILLness Therapy (FACIT), was validated with a group of 346 end -of -life stage oncologic patients accompanied in palliative care units. Construct validity, good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha 0,92) and test -retest reliability (r of 0,99) were established. Therefore this instrument is reliable, valid and sensitive to study the spiritual well -being on end -of -life oncologic patients accompanied in palliative care units.
