Resumo: The main purpose of this study is to determine a formula for the calculation of the volume of ultrafiltrate to be extracted by Modified Ultrafiltration (MUF) from adult patients undergoing heart surgery. The target population includes 489 cases corresponding to theheart surgeries performed from January 2003 to December 2005 meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria that have been established. It is a retrospective, correlational, and quantitative study that takes a deductive approach, with the studied variables having been collected from the cardiovascular perfusion reports of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit of Hospital de Santa Marta, EPE. The relation between the variables being studied was studied by means of correlation and linear regression models. The model obtained to define the formula of calculation wanted takes the existent correlation as a base between the volume to take out for MUF and the body surface of the patient when there is this the only one of three studied models that demonstrate a dependence, still weak that, between the variables, and is expressed through the formula: Y=545,4.X3, in that Y, is the volume take out for MUF and X is the value of the body surface of each patient and is representative only for 4% of the population in the study. The average increase of hemoglobin value after MUF is 1.9±1.09g/dl, which evidences the efficacy of this technique in obtaining hemoconcentration.
