Bioethics in Genetics: between science and art

Resumo: Medical Genetics is a transversal and multidisciplinary medical speciality whose activity encompasses, in a general and simplistic perspective, the diagnosis of rare genetic diseases and genetic counselling of hereditary pathologies. Genetic information is, more than medical information, health information and it has implications not only for the self but also for family members. Although this medical specialization deals with risks and probabilities based on exact sciences and rigorous laboratory methodology, it also keeps challenging professionals to think ethically in different daily situations. Even in cases where the law is specific and quite rigorous on how to deal with the problem, it can be challenging to know which is the most ethical conduct in this rarity world. Henceforth, some examples will be given to make us think about how genetics can be a science art with certainties and queries.

La información genética es, más que información médica, información sanitaria y tiene implicaciones no sólo para el individuo sino también para los miembros de su familia. Si bien esta especialización médica se ocupa de riesgos y probabilidades basados en ciencias exactas y metodologías de laboratorio rigurosas, también sigue desafiando a los profesionales a pensar éticamente en diferentes situaciones cotidianas. Incluso en casos en los que la ley es específica y bastante estricta sobre cómo abordar el problema, puede ser un reto saber cuál es el comportamiento más ético en este mundo de rarezas. A continuación, se expondrán algunos ejemplos que nos harán reflexionar sobre cómo la genética puede ser un arte científico con certezas y dudas.A Genética Médica é uma especialidade médica transversal e multidisciplinar cuja atividade engloba, numa perspetiva geral e simplista, o diagnóstico de doenças genéticas raras e o aconselhamento genético de patologias hereditárias. A informação genética é, mais do que informação médica, informação de saúde e tem implicações não só para o próprio, mas também para os familiares. Embora esta especialidade médica trate de riscos e probabilidades com base em ciências exatas e metodologias laboratoriais rigorosas, também continua a desafiar os profissionais a pensar eticamente em diferentes situações quotidianas. Mesmo nos casos em que a lei é específica e bastante rigorosa sobre como lidar com o problema, pode ser desafiador saber qual é a conduta mais ética neste mundo de raridades.
