Buying national: what changed in Portuguese consumption with the covid-19 pandemic

Resumo: This study aims at understanding how the Covid-19 pandemic changed Portuguese consumers’ perceptions regarding the importance of buying national o help the country recovering from the pandemic effects, and if this is effectively impacting their purchase decisions. The research follows a mixed-methods approach, since both qualitative and quantitative data were analysed. Following the qualitative phase, the study focuses on supermarket expenditure. After conducting 14 semi-structured interviews and collecting 429 valid responses in an online questionnaire, it was concluded that the valorisation of domestic purchases highly affects consumption positively, and that consumers are buying national more during than before the pandemic.
