The investigation developed in the scope of the presented work was focused on the city design in regards to the public and collective space systems that structure it, recognizing its centrality in the configuration and qualification of the urban system. As Jordi Borja refers, in a city, the public space is as much of an articulating element of the urban, regional or metropolitan fabrics, as it is an element of physical and symbolic cohesion.1 Focusing our analysis and reflection in the pedestrian dimension, in respect to the need of mobility and permanence, we look into identifying the conductive lines that define a quality contemporary design of the public space. Thus, the study we developed starts from a redesigning exercise of an existing public space system, in this case, of Bairro do Regado, with the purpose of updating and transforming it into a qualified space able to respond to the demands of current times. This way, we look into understanding how the development of reintegration and enhancement strategies of specific urban areas impacts the quality of urban life, by being able to create an inclusive, pleasant, and safe environment that favors community living. It is about rethinking the system design of collective spaces, both public and private, focusing on the human scale, in regards to problems of the contemporary city, but also the specific needs and aspirations of their habitants, namely the community living in Bairro do Regado. Therefore, through the comparison of past ideas, theories, and projects with the trend of contemporary ideas, theories, and projects, we can identify a group of strategies and principles for city redesign, which aims to promote an inclusive and safe environment, relating with nature, and focusing on life quality of its citizens, as well as the establishment of healthy relationships between them.
