Resumo: The stair is defined as a set of steps that connect the different levels of a building. This dissertation seeks to study the stairs in multi-family housing, focusing on buildings with vertical access core and gallery access that contain duplex dwellings, in order to understand both the buildings' common stair and the private residence stair. In the European context, existing studies on the stairwell are mainly oriented towards its symbolic or constructive aspects, giving little attention to the legal design codes. To try and overcome this aspect, the Portuguese legislation regarding stairs is analysed from the first draft of the General Regulation of Urban Buildings in 1951 to the last amendment of the Technical Regulation on Fire Safety in Buildings in 2020, analysing the increase in legal constraints and the evolution of the stairwells' characteristics. Alongside this analysis, ten buildings, designed at different times, and that are presented alongside the study of legislation are studied and drawn to understand what practical influence this legal code has had. The knowledge acquired from these three branches of study allows us to explore different pertinent issues regarding the design of the staircase, from its history to the elements that make it up.
