Social impairment is a common feature of patients with negative symptoms. Often due to early attachment problems and inherent characteristics of the disorder, people with psychosis usually present lack of interest and/or passive involvement in social relationships. Fears of compassion (FOC) relate to experiencing defensive emotions when facing affiliative emotions, such as compassion. FOC may constitute major blocks to recovery, manifesting itself through three flows: fears of receiving compassion from others, giving compassion to others and experiencing compassion for the self. This study aims to: explore the associations between negative symptoms (e.g. social withdrawal), FOC and social safeness; and investigate the mediator role of FOC in the relationship between negative symptoms and social safeness. A sample of 54 patients diagnosed with a psychosis-spectrum disorder (mostly Schizophrenia – 74%) were recruited, assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and asked to fill in measures of FOC and Social Safeness. Individuals were mostly male (61%), with a mean age of 31.15 years old (SD=8.28), single (76%), and unemployed (39%). Results showed that the different flows of FOC were associated with each other and, negatively, with social safeness. Only significant associations were found between FOC from others, FOC for self and negative symptoms (total score) and the same three negative symptoms assessed by PANSS (passive/apathetic social withdrawal, difficulty in abstract thinking, and lack of interest and flow of conversation). Parallel mediation showed that only FOC from others was significant as mediator in the relationship between negative symptoms and social safeness. These results stress that in individuals with psychosis, negative symptoms impact on difficulties in feeling safe and a sense of disconnectedness in their social world, mainly through fears of receiving compassion. This seems to indicate the relevant contribution of FOC to the interpersonal difficulties. FOC may be an important therapeutic target in promoting recovery in people with negative symptoms of psychosis.2017-10-13info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesishttp://hdl.handle.net/10316/84219http://hdl.handle.net/10316/84219TID:202144984engmetadata only accessinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessCruz, Tiago Manuel Gomes dareponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2022-05-25T03:18:45Zoai:estudogeral.uc.pt:10316/84219Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-19T21:05:50.227873Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
