Portugal has always been a country of emigration. Although in recent years immigration has gained great importance, it is emigration that most characterizes and represents us. Emigration and the “return to origins” are two characterizing elements of Portuguese society and culture. In this way, this internship report, carried out at the Emigrant Support Office of the Mondim de Basto Municipality, has as main objectives to understand the Portuguese migratory flow in general, but more specifically, the emigration of Mondim de Basto, and to dynamize the Emigrant Support Office, in order to also pay tribute and help to the many emigrants and ex-emigrants of this village. To achieve these objectives, and others proposed by the Municipality, to which I will refer later, an initial literary research was carried out on Portuguese emigration in general, in order to better understand the subject and, later, a research at the local level on the emigrant community of Mondim de Basto. As a way of supporting the research, a survey directed to the Mondinense emigrant community was elaborated, which allowed to characterize, in a succinct way, a little of the emigration of this place. The results of the initial and continuous research combined with the survey demonstrate the high importance of the emigrant community for the village of Mondim de Basto and for the host countries, due to its economic impact and its contribution to local development.
