O azulejo como elemento para a caracterização do espaço arquitectónico. Sé velha de Coimbra. Contributo para um inventário

O objecto de estudo da presente Dissertação incide sobre a análise e pesquisa da relação entre o azulejo e o espaço arquitectónico religioso na Sé Velha de Coimbra. O espaço arquitectónico religioso é de grande importância para a realidade nacional, sendo em grande parte caracterizado pela utilização do azulejo. É vasta e sólida a base bibliográfica sobre o azulejo, mas na literatura existente a abordagem que faz a esta temática é, quase sempre, numa perspectiva histórica e de catalogação, cingindo-se ao estudo do objecto em si (azulejo), sendo raros os casos em que se aborda a sua função na Arquitectura. Da pesquisa bibliográfica desenvolvida, resulta evidente a escassez de estudos abrangentes e/ou consistentes sobre as múltiplas funções dos revestimentos azulejares na Arquitectura e, ainda, sobre a relação que entre ambos se estabelece. Com o intuito de contribuir para colmatar esta lacuna técnico-analítica sobre as construções com acabamento azulejar, utiliza-se a um caso de estudo através do qual se visa demonstrar a relação entre azulejo e espaço arquitectónico, concretamente durante o séc. XVI, por ter sido este um dos períodos mais ricos a nível de composição azulejar e com maior variedade de técnicas aplicadas. Como adiante se verá, irá estudar-se o referente arquitectónico da Sé Velha de Coimbra, por ser suficientemente demonstrativo das questões que se pretendem analisar, tendo-se produzido uma exaustiva caracterização deste edifício, através de levantamentos gráficos, registos fotográficos, escritos e desenhados, tanto dos azulejos como de todas as características particulares de cada espaço. Seguidamente, com base nesta prévia compilação de informação, estruturou-se a opinião crítica sobre a forma como o azulejo e a arquitectura se relacionam entre si desenvolvendo temas como a composição geométrica, elementos decorativos, cor e luz; ABSTRACT: The object of study of this Dissertation focuses on the analysis and research of the relationship between the tile and the religious architectural space in the Sé Velha de Coimbra. The religious architectural space is of great importance for the national reality, being largely characterized by the use of tile. The bibliographic base on the tile is vast and solid, but the existing literature approaches this theme, almost always, from a historical and cataloging perspective, limited to the study of the object itself (tile), with rare cases in which its role in architecture is addressed. From the bibliographic research carried out, it is evident the scarcity of comprehensive and/or consistent studies on the multiple functions of tile coverings in Architecture and, also, on the relationship that is established between the two. In order to contribute to filling this technical-analytical gap on buildings with tile finishing, a case study is used through which it aims to demonstrate the relationship between tile and architectural space, specifically during the 16th century, because it was a of the richest periods in terms of tile composition and with the greatest variety of techniques applied. As will be seen below, the architectural reference of the Sé Velha de Coimbra will be studied, as it is sufficiently demonstrative of the issues to be analyzed, having produced an exhaustive characterization of this building, through graphic surveys, photographic records, writings and drawings, both the tiles and all the particular characteristics of each space. Then, based on this previous compilation of information, the critical opinion was structured on the way in which tile and architecture relate to each other, developing themes such as geometric composition, decorative elements, color and light.
