SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19: Virologic Aspects of a Pandemic

Resumo: In December 2019 a viral infection associated with severe pneumonia was identified. This infection quickly spread and became a pandemic, imposing quarantine, isolation of infected people and a radical change in social life.The causative agent of this infection, a coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), has been isolated and characterized. In less than six months, data on the virus and the disease it causes (COVID-19) have accumulated to such an extent that it is already possible to make review articles on several aspects of the pandemic.In this review article, the virological characteristics of this new human virus will be addressed. From the origins and initial spread, to its diagnosis.

Esta infeção rapidamente alastrou tornando-se numa pandemia que obrigou a situações de isolamento de pessoas e à alteração radical da vida social.O agente causal desta infeção, um coronavírus (SARS-CoV-2), foi isolado e caracterizado. Em menos de seis meses acumularam-se dados sobre o vírus e sobre a doença que ele provoca (COVID-19) de tal forma abundantes que ao fim desse tempo já é possível fazer artigos de revisão sobre vários aspetos da pandemia.Neste artigo de revisão serão abordadas as características virológicas deste novo vírus humano.
