Housing shows the expression of society, culture and man. Both the house and the home are crucial and essential goods, where one expresses his own individuality and shares experiences. The issues related to social needs, shelter and informal settlement are everlasting and widespread. Thus, men endless quest to achieve a better and more comfortable life is always present while searching for a better future. This work aims at presenting a proposal to improve housing conditions for a portion of land consisting of three "islands" in Serralves area, selected from the SAAL process, 1976 - Serralves Operation, in which Alcino Soutinho was the architect in charge of the technical squad. Therefore, a practical project of social housing is presented according to SAAL's principles. Moreover, a research has been made on how architecture responds to the lack of accommodation for a needing population, which is followed by an analysis of the solutions applied during the housing crisis in Europe between wars and after World War II. Contemporary examples of social housing in South America are also used as the basis of the practical project, namely within the Brazilian program Favela-Bairro and in Chile with the Elemental one. The theme of housing for social ends is also considered, by studying men current needs and the subsequent new models of living, in order to address a prevailing, universal and timeless issue.
