Between 1975 and 1985 the Portuguese economy went through several cycles of imbalance and adjustment, resorting several times in this period to Conditional Programs of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Through an application of the qualitative causal process methodology, we sought to identify causal relationships between the different cycles and what was the particular impact that the IMF interventions on the evolution of the Portuguese economy during this period. We concluded that there was a causal relationship between the various cycles and that they resulted from the interaction between the IMF's actions and the internal and external context, and that the IMF had a more active role in the adjustment periods than in the periods of disequilibrium, but had a relevant role in both.
