This dissertation consists of the creation of a project proposal for a study centre in the area of the former Senhor do Além ceramics factory, which is located on the Serra do Pilar escarpment in Vila Nova de Gaia. Given the state of conservation of the building, which does not allow access, the analysis and proposal were developed on the basis of an archaeological survey and report carried out in 2008. The proposal presented is intended to be a possible response, in the form of a project, to offer the place a new function in a new era. The body of the work is organised into three parts: past, present and future - three eras that are divided between analysis and proposal. In the first part, a historical narrative is drawn up about the ceramics factory and its chapel, framed within the historical and urban development of the two cities that surround it, Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, in order to help identify the values to be preserved and enhanced. The second part aims to build a personal opinion about heritage intervention, industrial heritage and the preservation of the ruin, based on bibliography and the analysis of practices. For the personal design choices, it was important to understand the values of the ruined building, the value of memory and the discussions of the last two centuries on heritage intervention. With the knowledge acquired about the historical evolution of the site of the old factory, as well as international doctrines on heritage intervention, a project proposal was drawn up, which constitutes the third part. The design options were, on the one hand, to maintain the elements of a previous history, preserving the ruin, only consolidating and conserving the structures, and on the other, proposing new uses in order to revitalise this space. And adapting the surroundings to a new programme, integrating the needs of the current community, deepens and strengthens the characteristics of the existing site, highlighting the pre-existing features.
