Resumo: The paper presents a comparative study on flexible cantilever retaining walls using conventional limit equilibrium methods and finite element analyses for conditions as close as possible to failure. The results are compared in terms of the depth of excavation and the correspondent maximum bending moment on the wall. The effect of the tangential stresses mobilized at the soil-to-wall interface, which is not accounted for in the conventional methods, is emphasized.
