The prevalence of violence towards the elderly: a critical review of the literature

Resumo: The studies on the prevalence of violence towards the elderly in a family context that have been conducted in the last thirty years, especially in Europe and Anglo-Saxon countries, are not sufficiently elucidative. This is due to shortcomings in both the definition of their theoretical models and their operative  concepts. The authors of this article have systematically reviewed the literature and identified a diversity of definitions and research designs, which has an inevitable impact in terms of varying estimates. The European public perception of this problem is also at odds with the low figures contained in this type of estimate. The authors offer some thoughts about the underlying reasons for these representations, and critique the estimates made in population-based prevalence studies.

En este artículo de revisión sistemática de la literatura se identifica la diversidad de definiciones y diseños de investigación, con un impacto inevitable en las variaciones de las estimativas. La percepción de la opinión pública europea sobre el problema también colide con los bajos valores estimados. Se procura reflexionar sobre las razones subyacentes a esas representaciones y discutir críticamente sobre las estimativas de los estudios de prevalencia de base poblacional.Les études de prévalence sur la violence envers les personnes âgées au sein de la famille, menées au cours des trente dernières années, en particulier en Europe et dans les pays anglo-saxons, ne nous éclairent pas suffisamment à cause des lacunes dans la définition des modèles théoriques et dans les concepts opératoires. Cet article fait une révision systématique de la littérature et souligne la diversité des définitions et des paramètres de recherche, avec un impact inévitable sur les variations des résultats. La perception de l’opinion publique européenne contrarie elle aussi les faibles chiffres estimés. L’article s’interroge sur les raisons sous-jacentes à ces représentations et mène une réflexion critique sur les estimations des études de prévalence de base populationnelle.Os estudos de prevalência sobre a violência contra as pessoas idosas, em contexto familiar, desenvolvidos nas três últimas décadas, especialmente na Europa e países anglo-saxónicos, não são suficientemente esclarecedores, por insuficiências na definição dos modelos teóricos e nos conceitos operatórios. Neste artigo de revisão sistemática da literatura identifica-se a diversidade de definições e desenhos de investigação, com impacto inevitável nas variações das estimativas.
