Resumo: | The present narrative addresses the observation of the interactions between what are identified here as permanent entities and ephemeral entities that constitute the urban environment of the contemporary city, as well as their contributions towards the construction of a sense of place within the urban environment, through a multidimensional approach. It is built upon the premise of a transformed contemporary urban and spatial experience due to the development of technical progress and social transformations observed in the last decades, which induces the establishment of a particular focus on themes such as temporality and transdisciplinarity. The comprehension of what are these entities does follow a simple distinction, which sorts them out into two main groups: the things whose presence endures for a more lasting and recognizable length of time, and the things whose presence manifests in a more ephemeral way. Aware of the vastness of the definition, the narrative framework is mainly designed to focus on the observation of such entities that participate in an intentional and propositional way in the construction of places within the urban environment, also from the perspective of artistic/creative thinking, namely the fields of urbanism, architecture, art, and the body as a performative element - in its contemporary expression - interested as well in the disciplinary overlaps among themselves and with other fields external to the established framework of analysis. Hence, a metaphor is tailored to name the narrative: Kaleidoscopic Vertigo. The usage of a metaphorical resource in order to outline the observed phenomenon is not accidental, but strategic. It is carried out through the conscious use of its semantic malleability as a means of encompassing the dynamic and complex behaviour of the contemporary world, particularly with regard to the difficulties and weaknesses of establishing disciplinary boundaries in its reality, but also in its instability, its profusion of nexuses, contradictions and uncertainties. It is called Kaleidoscopic Vertigo, firstly, for communicating the idea of movement, dynamism, and disorientation that are particular to vertigo, understood here as a defining feature of contemporary society. Secondly, it also insinuates the multiplicity of perspectives and interpretations possible within the same society as an attempt to extract poetic potential from this condition, just like an object observed through the lenses of a kaleidoscope. The structure of the work is built in three main parts, the first of which is the observation of the contemporary circumstance, regarding the general conditions of global society, as well as the verification of the state of the art of both the production of space and of the notion of place nowadays, from a predominantly Western bias. The two subsequent moments concern themselves directly with the observation of the interactions between permanent and ephemeral entities, alternating the perspectives of analysis between one and the other, respectively. Thus, the main object of the dissertation is the collection of several pieces of work - permanent and ephemeral - observed from a multidimensional perspective - in order to build a panorama, all of which are gathered and displayed as a sort of curatorial project. Therefore, it does not consist of an attempt to encompass all knowledge about one specific piece, the practice of one particular author, or any isolated concept. In this sense, its ultimate interest is to establish a sort of thread capable of connecting and organizing them all through the themes of ephemerality and multidimensionality, contributing as a way to encourage transdisciplinary projectual strategies and highlighting what may be the poetic potential of its manifestation. |
