Publishing systems in mutation: a few introductory notes on a problematic stance

The reflection and study of book publishing focus on a polymorphic and intricate object, whose tendency to mutate has intensified in the last decades, generating processes of concentration and polarization in the book industry that affect an increasing number of publishing systems. The transforming trends in the book world that have been taking place with greater intensity over the last decades refer to phenomena and processes of a profound complex nature, the study of which must be governed by an ability to question from a problematic stance. This means to be capable of an observation and interpretation guided by a critical adoption of explanatory models and analytical scales in which the national unit must be increasingly interwoven with a transnational perspective. This article draws on the current reality of the small presses as an example of the complex character inherent to the contemporary dynamics of the book.
