Academic affiliation of Surgical Departments: a pathway towards surgery teaching and surgeons’ academic promotion

Resumo: The affiliation of non-university hospital Services for teaching undergraduate students has been implemented, under the Reform process of the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa, through the nineties of the last century. Constraints and challenges of this experience are now ready to analysis and the debate of data should proceed to reassure convergence of the educational aims with the ongoing results and to redefine strategies for the future. Formal training of tutors seems to be felt as a plus for the quality of the educational affiliation. As the affiliation network has come to a mature status a new level of institutional ooperation should be looked for. Research enterprises should be developed inside this network to build up a regular in -house incorporating team environment to call and select candidates for an academic surgical career, as if they worked in the main university hospital.

As potencialidades da afiliação em geral não estão dissociadas de alguns constrangimentos, que importa acautelar, para que os modelos a implementar possam corresponder aos objectivos educacionais para que forem estabelecidos. A formação educacional dos tutores deve ser considerada como uma mais -valia no processo de afiliação para o ensino.
