Despite all the recent advances, CS is invariably associated with mortality rates around 40-50%. Interestingly, some reports even describe a recent increase in the probability of developing CS after AMI and in the mortality rates, probably due to ageing of population and increased risk profiles. When general intensive care measures are insufficient, mechanical circulatory support is an option, with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) being one of the most popular options nowadays. The development of miniaturized systems and percutaneous cannulations have widened the use of ECMO. Although initial trials observed a significant increase of survival in CS with the use of ECMO, the evidence for its use in CS is scarce, and limited to observational studies and three small randomized trials.Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia Cárdio-Torácica e VascularRepositório da Universidade de LisboaVelho, Tiago R.2024-02-27T17:04:04Z20242024-01-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10451/62983engPort J Card Thorac Vasc Surg. 2024 Feb 9;30(4):11-1210.48729/pjctvs.4262184-9927info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-04T01:20:46Zoai:repositorio.ul.pt:10451/62983Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:12:32.525166Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse
