Contudo, a investigação acerca dos processos mediadores desta relação é escassa. O presente estudo explorou um modelo que testou o efeito do afeto negativo e positivo na sintomatologia das perturbações do comportamento alimentar, através da alimentação intuitiva e da flexibilidade da imagem corporal, enquanto se controla o efeito do índice de massa corporal. Neste estudo participaram 273 mulheres, com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e 45 anos, que completaram instrumentos de autorresposta. O modelo testado demonstrou uma adequação excelente aos dados empíricos e explicou um total de 64% da variância dos sintomas das perturbações do comportamento alimentar. Este modelo revelou que o impacto do afeto negativo e positivo na sintomatologia das perturbações do comportamento alimentar depende do nível de alimentação intuitiva e flexibilidade da imagem corporal, mesmo quando se controla o efeito do índice de massa corporal. Este estudo contribui para a compreensão do papel adaptativo e mediador que a alimentação intuitiva e a flexibilidade da imagem corporal desempenham na relação entre a afetividade e as dificuldades alimentares. De facto, estes processos de regulação emocional parecem desempenhar um papel protetor face a perturbações alimentares, ao reduzir a reatividade e alimentação impulsiva em resposta ao afeto negativo e positivo. Os resultados do estudo sugerem que os programas de prevenção e intervenção dirigidos a dificuldades relacionadas com o corpo e a alimentação devem destacar a importância de um padrão de alimentação mais adaptativo e da flexibilidade da imagem corporal, o que parece especialmente relevante para lidar com as mensagens paradoxais das sociedades ocidentais em relação ao corpo e à alimentação.Purpose: Negative affect is associated with body image and eating-related problems. Nonetheless, research of mediating emotional processes in this relationship is scant. The present study explored a path model testing the effect of negative and positive affect on disordered eating symptoms, via its effect on intuitive eating and body image flexibility, while controlling for the effect of BMI. Methods: Participated in this study 273 women, aged between 18 and 45 years old, who completed self-report measures. Results: The tested model showed an excellent fit to the empirical data and explained a total of 64% of the variance of disordered eating attitudes and behaviours. This model revealed that the impact of negative and positive affect on disordered eating symptomatology depends on the level of intuitive eating and body image flexibility, even when controlling for the effect of body mass index. Conclusions: This study contributes for the understanding of the adaptative and mediational role that intuitive eating and body image flexibility play on the link between affectivity and eating-related difficulties. Indeed, these emotional regulation processes seem to play a protective role against disordered eating, by reducing reactivity and impulsive eating in response to negative and positive affect.
