Resumo: | Although, on the overall, modernism aimed towards breaking with tradition and historicity, not all modern architects approached History the same way. This issue was addressed by Mies van der Rohe in a conference in 1928, when he distinguished three different standpoints amidst early modern architects, namely those who despised historical references, those who devotedly followed tradition and those who stood in between, pursuing a balance between the historical link and modern ideas. Their differentiating factor, attitude towards History, was linked with a general concern on being 'zeitgemäß', acting under a 'consciousness of the age', and was object of struggle and segregation within the modernist panorama.Early modern architects Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe share very similar backgrounds, as their lives and careers coincide in many circumstances.Their paths crossed as early as 1908, when both joined Peter Behrens's office. During their training years with Behrens, Gropius and Mies were significantly influenced by classical ideals, as at that time Behrens worked under a neoclassic influence, getting to know the work of architects like Schinkel, who eventually came to play an essential role through the development of their ideas.Despite recurrent overlapping of the paths of these two architects, as their both mingled with the same groups, participated on the Bauhaus Exhibition in 1923, worked on the Weissenhof in 1927, were directors at the Bauhaus at different moments and decided to emigrate to the USA in 1937, Gropius and Mies developed quite different perspectives on architecture and construction over time, namely when it comes to the role of history.Awareness of the common historical influence both received in their training years, namely classical, raises interest on its possible repercussion over the careers of both architects and, at the same time, on their position among the three groups set by Mies and its development over time. The study of their theories and buildings and its evolution shall clarify their perspectives at each moment and help understanding their ideas towards history and placing them within the modernist frame, furthermore helping to understand if and how they played a role on the dissemination of these historical ideas within the modern movement, whether conscious or unconsciously. |
