Introduction: The stigma remains to be seen as a barrier to a recovery of individuals with schizophrenia. In addition the personal and social chaos that the disease itself entails, they will also have to learn to deal with the marginalization of society. Aims: This study has as main objective to validate the Perceived Devaluation and Discrimination Scale (PDD) for the portuguese population, in a sample of individuals with schizophrenia. Method: The sample consisted of 78 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, recruited in a community context. Of the respondents, 61 were male, aged between 19 and 65 years who completed the PDD (portuguese version) and sociodemographic and clinical characterization data. For translation, back-translation was followed the international guidelines. Results: Concerning the sociodemographic data, we can point out that in the case of marital status they are single (83.3%), attended the 1st Cycle (25.6%) and most of them are pensioners (47.4%). Respondents were diagnosed for schizophrenia on average 17,3 years ago and were hospitalized on average 3,4 ? 2,67 times. The nine-item PDD (portuguese version) instrument presented a Cronbach's alpha of 0,711 which reveals a reasonable internal consistency, organizing only one factor. 65,4% of the participants had a perceived stigma value higher than 2,5 which indicates a high level of perceived stigma. Individuals with a partner have on average a lower value of perceived stigma (U = 282,500; p < 0,05), however, there are no differences in perceived stigma depending on the profession, age, diagnosis time and the number of hospitalizations. Conclusion: The Portuguese version of the PDD is reliable and useful to evaluate the perceived stigma, and it is important to strengthen the affective relationships that are considered as the support for the reduction of the perceived stigma.
