Awakening to languages with digital narrative in preschool education

Resumo: In a society marked by globalization and linguistic and cultural diversity, it is important to stimulate, as soon as possible, the children’s awareness to language and its diversity. Several studies reported the positive contribution of the awakening to language approaches for children’s awareness to diversity and respect towards the Other. On the other hand, in an era in which technologies are part of children’s daily life as simplifiers of the learning process, the digital narratives in interactive whiteboard can also be a contribute to this process, providing greater interaction and involvement during activities. The purpose of this study is to understand how we can awake pre-school children to linguistic diversity, using the interactive whiteboard starting from storytelling. This study is part of a qualitative research with action research characteristics, since we wanted to analyze the meaning of the educational phenomena observed at different moments. Several tools were used to collect data, such as direct observation, transcription of video-recordings, field notes and children’s drafts.The results of this project, obtained through content analysis of children’s interactions, demonstrate that the early contact with other languages allowed for the development of children’s linguistic awareness, based on the identification and comparison of different languages. In addition, the integration of the interactive whiteboard in this project with a digital short story allowed verifying a higher commitment of children in the realization of the proposals, enhancing the development of technological and literacy competences.

Plusieurs études montrent que le travail d’éveil aux langues et aux cultures contribue positivement à la prise de conscience de la diversité et à la formation d’attitudes de respect envers l’Autre. D’autre part, dans un monde où les technologies font de plus en plus partie de la vie quotidienne des enfants et sont considérées comme un outil d’apprentissage, le tableau blanc interactif peut contribuer dans ce processus dans la mesure où l’interactivité qu’il proportionne permet une plus grande participation dans les activités.L’objectif de cette étude est de comprendre comment éveiller à la diversité linguistique, à l’aide du tableau blanc interactif et à partir d’un projet autour d’une histoire numérique. Notre étude est de nature qualitative avec des caractéristiques de recherche-action, puisque nous voulions analyser la signification des phénomènes éducatifs observés à différents moments.Les techniques de collecte de données intègrent l’observation directe, la transcription de l’enregistrement vidéo des activités, le journal de bord et les registres des enfants.Les résultats obtenus à travers l’analyse de contenu montrent que les contacts des enfants avec les langues a permis le développement de leur conscience linguistique, à travers l’identification et la comparaison de différentes langues. En outre, le recours au tableau blanc interactif dans ce projet ainsi que l’exploitation d’un conte ont contribué à une implication des enfants dans la réalisation des activités et l’acquisition de savoirs technologiques et de littéracie.Numa sociedade marcada pela globalização e pela diversidade linguística e cultural, importa sensibilizar as crianças, desde cedo, para a importância desta realidade. Vários estudos demonstram que o trabalho de sensibilização para a diversidade linguística tem contribuído positivamente para a consciencialização da diversidade e para a formação de atitudes de respeito pelo Outro. Por outro lado, numa época em que as tecnologias fazem parte do quotidiano das crianças e são vistas como um meio facilitador da aprendizagem, também o conto digital no quadro interativo pode contribuir neste processo, proporcionando uma maior interatividade e envolvimento das crianças nas atividades.O objetivo do estudo que aqui se apresenta é verificar se o uso do conto digital, recorrendo ao quadro interativo, permite sensibilizar para a diversidade linguística, no pré-escolar. O nosso estudo enquadra-se numa investigação qualitativa com características de investigação-ação, uma vez que pretendíamos analisar o significado dos fenómenos educativos observados em diferentes momentos. Os instrumentos de recolha de dados basearam-se na observação direta, transcrição de videogravação de atividades, notas de campo e fichas de registo das crianças.Os resultados obtidos através da análise de conteúdo das interações das crianças demonstram que o contacto precoce com as línguas propiciou o desenvolvimento da consciência linguística das crianças, a partir da identificação e comparação de diferentes línguas.
