School analysis in the perspective of educational professionals: characteristics, dynamics and conduits

Resumo: The school has a fundamental role in the psychosocial development of young people, and is a privileged context for that development as well as for the prevention of various social phenomena. The professionals who work in this context, in turn, are key agents of fundamental changes. Therefore, they should be considered in assessing the most diverse needs and problems. The present study, using the questionnaire survey method, involved a sample of 302 educational agents, aged between 29 and 66 years (M=50,25; D.P.=8,16.), and the majority of the participants was women (72,8%). The results pointed to a favorable perception of the respondents regarding the characteristics of the surrounding physical environment, as well as the internal and external functioning ofthe school environment. Nonetheless, participants rated negatively the involvement of parents in initiatives promoted by school institutions; they also identified various students’problematic behavioral manifestations that should be considered (e.g., school absenteeism, widespread disrespect among students, aggression). The participants also identified some measures (e.g., increase human resources, greater rigor in the disciplinary system, promote policing, create multidisciplinary teams) that it is important to promote at school level. Finally, we discuss the practical and preventive implications of this work.

Finally, we discuss the practical and preventive implications of this work. A escola desempenha um papel fundamental no desenvolvimento psicossocial dos jovens, constituindo-se como um meio privilegiado para a sua promoção, mas também para a prevenção dos mais diversos fenómenos sociais. Os profissionais que integram este contexto, por sua vez, representam agentes de mudança fulcrais, devendo por isso ser considerados na avaliação das mais diversas necessidades. O presente estudo, com recurso ao método do inquérito por questionário, envolveu uma amostra de 302 agentes educativos, com idades compreendidas entre os 29 e os 66 anos (M=50,25; D.P.=8,16) e a maioria dos participantes a pertencer ao sexo feminino (72,8%). Os resultados apontaram para umaperceção favorável dos respondentes a respeito das características do meio físico envolvente, bem como dos funcionamentos interno e externo do meio escolar. Não obstante, os participantes classificaram negativamente o envolvimento dos encarregados de educação nas iniciativas promovidas pelas instituições escolares e identificaram diversas manifestações comportamentais por parte dos alunos (e.g., absentismo escolar, desrespeito generalizado entre alunos, agressividade) que devem ser consideradas. Os participantes apontaram ainda algumas medidas (e.g., alargar e potenciar os recursos humanos, incutir maior rigor no sistema disciplinar, promover o policiamento, criar equipas multidisciplinares) que importa promover ao nível do funcionamento em meio escolar.
