Resumo: Dyspnoea affects life quality of the patient and its family due to the impairment of communication and every day activities, anxiety and even panic. Most patients with cancer suffer dyspnoea episodes resulting from the primary disease, metastasis or even from treatment. During these phases, patients at home need informal caregivers to assist then in their activities. Thepresent descriptive exploratory study, includes the participation of 14 informal caregivers of cancer patients with dyspnoea. The results showed that caregivers reduce their social activities and present dichotomous feelings of both comfort and sadness. During acute episodes of dyspnoea apathy and despair are the predominant experiences reported by these caregivers.

During acute episodes of dyspnoea apathy and despair are the predominant experiences reported by these caregivers.A dispneia afeta a qualidade de vida da própria pessoa e da sua família, pela dificuldade de comunicação, pelo comprometimento do desempenho das atividades de vida diária, pela ansiedade e até pelo pânico. A maior parte dos doentes com cancro vivenciam episódios de dispneia, sendo esta, resultado da patologia primária, de metástases ou resultante do próprio tratamento. Nesta fase, o doente no domicílio necessita de um cuidador informal para o ajudar nas suas atividades.Neste estudo de cariz descritivo-exploratório, participaram 14 cuidadores informais de pessoas com dispneia no domicílio. Os resultados evidenciam que os cuidadores informais diminuem as suas atividades sociais, e manifestam sentimentos dicotómicos de reconforto e tristeza por cuidarem do seu familiar.
