Education in museums: among concepts and practices

Resumo: The purpose of this article is to reflect on educative actions conducted in museums and, at the same time, reflect on concepts and methodologies that run through the fields of education, history, and heritage. In a second moment, in a more specific approach, we have observed the work done at the Museum of Anthropology in Vale do Paraíba – MAV – considering the reports written by the institution´s Educative Sector, between 1995 and 1996, a period in which one sees a great concern about performing educative practices. This two-fold perspective allows to think that both the MAV´s specific activities and, in broader basis, discuss the topic of education in museums and its more or less vigorous connections with school protocols, its curricula, and practices. The objectives are mainly related to advocating for the heritage and conservating records of the past, to ensure access to it and its democratization. And, of course, advocating for an education in museums capable of fostering these ideals. Keywords: Museum; Education in museums; Heritage education.

Además, en un enfoque más específico, observamos el trabajo del Museo de Antropología de Vale do Paraíba - MAV - considerando informes elaborados por el Sector Educativo de la institución, entre 1995 y 1996, período en el que se percibe una mayor preocupación con la realización de prácticas educativas. Esta doble perspectiva nos permite pensar tanto en las actividades específicas del MAV como, en términos más amplios, discutir el tema de la educación en los museos y su conexión más o menos vigorosa con los protocolos escolares, sus currículos y prácticas. Los objetivos, sobre todo, están relacionados con la defensa del patrimonio y la preservación de los registros del pasado, la garantía de acceso y su democratización. Y la defensa, por supuesto, de una educación en los museos capaz de promover estos ideales. Palabras clave: Museos; Educación en Museos; Educación PatrimonialCet article propose une réflexion sur les actions éducatives menées dans les musées et, simultanément, sur les concepts et méthodologies qui imprègnent les domaines de l'éducation, de l'histoire et du patrimoine. Dans un deuxième temps, dans une approche plus ponctuelle, nous observons le travail du Musée d’anthropologie de la Vallée du Paraíba - MAV - en considérant les rapports produits par le Secteur Educatif de l'institution, entre 1995 et 1996, période dans laquelle on remarque une plus grande préoccupation avec l'accomplissement des pratiques éducatives. Ce double regard nous permet de réfléchir à la fois aux activités spécifiques de la MAV et, de manière plus large, de discuter du thème de l'éducation dans les musées et de son lien plus ou moins vigoureux avec les protocoles scolaires, leurs programmes et leurs pratiques. Les objectifs, avant tout, concernent la défense du patrimoine et la préservation des archives du passé, la garantie de l'accès et sa démocratisation. Et la défense, bien sûr, d'une éducation dans des musées capables de promouvoir ces idéaux. No segundo momento, numa abordagem mais pontual, observamos o trabalho do Museu de Antropologia do Vale do Paraíba – MAV - considerando relatórios produzidos pelo Setor Educativo da instituição, entre 1995 e 1996, período no qual se nota uma preocupação maior com a realização de práticas educativas. Essa dupla mirada permite pensar tanto sobre as atividades pontuais do MAV quanto, em termos mais amplos, discutir o tema da educação em museus e sua ligação mais ou menos vigorosa com protocolos escolares, seus currículos e práticas. Os objetivos, sobretudo, relacionam-se à defesa do patrimônio e da preservação de registros do passado, a garantia de acesso e sua democratização. E à defesa, é claro, de uma educação em museus capaz de promover estes ideais.
