This work investigates the intervention process that people carry out in the spaces they inhabit, more specifically the living room. This study is based on the understanding of domestic spaces as a place of experiences, subjected to the projection of a personal character. It is intended to analyze an environment that results from the combination of the chosen equipments, of its layout in space, and its finishes. It introduces broader concepts, whose main objective is the presentation and framing of the central theme. Like the notion of space, one physical and the other symbolic, to better understand the relationship that exists between man and the environment. Followed by an approach to the act of inhabiting and, consequently, sheltering. This framework serves as an introduction to more specific and relevant themes for the understanding of an adaptation that is required for both the inhabitant and the dwelling, so that the coexistence is as adequate, safe, comfortable, and satisfactory as possible. To this end, the results of a questionnaire applied to two residential buildings in Algés were analyzed. This way, it was possible to observe that the autonomous process of an inhabitant, unlike the one of a professional, is a less structured process, which arises occasionally, out of necessity, and is elaborated over a long period of time, according to their resources. The adequacy of the choices responds to the constraints and potential presented by the spaces of the house. Finally, the created environment is influenced by something mentioned as being the result of a 'personal taste'. It is thus concluded that there is no awareness of both the programming and the existing references, but that there is a method guided by desire and need.
