Resumo: Objective: To determine:1) the results of labial salivary gland biopsies (LSGB)2) the implications of the results with respect to the classification criteria of Sjögren’s syndrome (SS)3) Assess the sensitivity of LSGB in SS in patients from our Unit with the clinical diagnosis of SS.Methods: The clinical charts from all the patients with the diagnosis of SS were reviewed using theEuropean Study Group’s classification criteria. Results and conclusions: 78 patients had a clinical diagnosis of SS. A LSGB was performed in 56 (71.8%)patients. According to the Chisholm-Manson classification, the results were: stage 0 (4%), stage 1(11%), stage 2 (29%), stage 3 (31%) and stage 4 (25%). The LSGB was essential for correctclassification in 44.6% of patients. Its sensitivity was 82.1%, when a stage 3 or 4 was considered.

Seco.
