Os Livros das Sentenças de Pedro Lombardo na Biblioteca de Alcobaça

Redigidos em meados do século XII pelo bispo de Paris Pedro Lombardo, os quatro livros das Sentenças constituem-se como uma obra fundamental no campo da especulação teológica, mas também como um dos livros mais difundidos e comentados em contexto universitário, sendo que o número de manuscritos que chegaram até hoje é bastante elevado. É nossa intenção tentar explicar as razões do sucesso desta obra e analisar os três manuscritos iluminados das Sentenças que pertenceram ao Mosteiro de Alcobaça (Alc. 362, Alc. 235 e Alc. 417). A decoração iluminada destes três códices vai ser articulada com a produção do scriptorium desta abadia, com a circulação de manuscritos entre abadias cistercienses e com o ambiente universitário parisiense. Por fim, as iluminuras destes manuscritos testemunham as diferentes condições de recepção subjacentes às Sentenças durante mais de um século. Written in the mid-12th century by the Bishop of Paris Pedro Lombardo, the book of Sentences constitute not only a fundamental work to the field of theological speculation but also one of the most widespread and best commented books within the university context with a fairly significant number of manuscripts having survived down the course of history. Our objective here involves explaining the reasons for the success of this work and analyse the three illustrated Sentences manuscripts belonging to the Monastery of Alcobaça (Alc. 362, Alc. 235 and Alc. 417). The illustrated decorations of these three codices undergoes articulation with the scriptorium production and the circulation of manuscripts among Cistercian abbeys and alongside the respective prevailing Parisian university context. Finally, the illuminations contained within these manuscripts bear witness to the different underlying terms of reception experienced by Sentences over the course of over a century.
