From risk to haemorrhage in Head and Neck cancer patients: How to intervene

Resumo: The presence of hemorrhage in the person with head and neck cancer can be devastating with severe implications for quality of life or even survival. The signaling of the person at risk and its prevention is basic, which requires that, in conjunction with the medical team, the nurse to rigorously assess the risk persons and the possible etiology of possible bleeding, identifying sentinel events predisposing to a bleeding episode, tailoring the material and technique to a specific situation. Nurses should have knowledge and skills in the prevention and management of haemorrhage in head and neck cancer patients, as well as instruct the person for alarm signs. This article aims to provide a theoretical framework on the performance in the various types ofhaemorrhage for which the person with head and neck cancer has an increased risk.

A sinalização da pessoa em risco e a sua prevenção é basilar, o que requer por parte do enfermeiro, em articulação com equipa médica, uma rigorosa avaliação das pessoas de risco e da possível etiologia da eventual hemorragia, identificando eventos sentinela predisponente para um episódio hemorrágico, adequando o material e a técnica à situação específica. Os enfermeiros devem, deter conhecimentos e competências no âmbito da prevenção e atuação em situações de hemorragia no doente oncológico de cabeça e pescoço, bem como instruir a pessoa para sinais de alarme.
