Professions today: self-criticism and reflections for the future

Resumo: This article revisits my 1977 work The Rise of Professionalism, outlining what I now believe was wrong in my book and what I think may still be useful in order to move on to some ideas about the present situation. One of the predominant questions is whether we should completely merge the study of professions with that of knowledge-based occupations. And if we accept that the age of experts has entirely supplanted the former public life of trustee professions, what consequences derive? What trends will future research need to consider? These tentative and incomplete ideas should be read as calls for further research.

Una de las preguntas predominantes es si debemos fundir el estudio de profesiones con el estudio de ocupaciones basadas en el conocimiento. Y si aceptáramos que el alcance de los especialistas suplantó por completo a la antigua vida pública de los profesionales administrativos, ¿qué consecuencias resultan? ¿qué tendencias tendrá que considerar la futura investigación? Estos intentos e ideas incompletas deberían ser leídas como llamados para hacer más investigación.Cet article revisite mon travail de 1977, The Rise of Professionalism, en revenant sur ce qui me semble aujourd’hui erroné dans mon livre et ce qui me paraît être encore utile, afin de formuler quelques idées sur la situation actuelle. L’une des questions prédominantes est de savoir si nous devons regrouper l’étude des professions et l’étude des occupations fondées sur la connaissance. Et si nous acceptons que l’époque des experts a entièrement supplanté l’ancienne vie publique des professionnels administratifs, quelles conséquences en tirer? Quelles tendances la future recherche devra-t-elle prendre en considération ? Ces tentatives et ces idées incomplètes devraient être lues comme des invitations à approfondir la recherche.Este artigo revisita o meu trabalho de 1977, A Ascenção do Profissionalismo, delineando o que eu agora acredito que estava errado no meu livro e o que penso ainda ser útil, de forma a avançar para algumas ideias sobre a presente situação. Uma das perguntas predominantes é se devemos fundir o estudo de profissões com o estudo de ocupações baseadas em conhecimento. E se aceitarmos que a era dos especialistas suplantou por inteiro a antiga vida pública dos profissionais administrativos, que consequências derivam daí? Que tendências terá a futura investigação de considerar?
