Museums during the 20th century have become relevant spaces for addressing complex social issues. As the recognition of cultural heritage has become more comprehensive and inclusive, cultural manifestations and identity aspects, previously excluded or devalued, have started participating more significantly in society and the public space. Among those aspects, the traumatic memory gains visibility through civil claim and/or the recognition of acts caused by trauma promoting agents. In this scenario, memorial museums appear with the main objective to bring to light memories of pain of certain groups through the exhibition, collection of testimonies of the period portrayed and the promotion of human rights. The present study aims to deepen the knowledge about museums regarding traumatic memories, as well as the processes that enabled its existence and its acceptance as an identity element of a group, place or nation.
