A produção artística de Lagoa Henriques : o processo clássico nos esbocetos de Sissi

This paper presents a case study of two models in bronze, belonging to the the legacy of Master Lagoa Henriques which, during the investigation, were identified as models of Sissi, the Empress Consort of Austria and the Queen Consort of Hungary (1837-1898), whose final sculpture is placed in the Casino Garden – Funchal, Madeira. The objective of this work lies in the study of materials and techniques used by the sculptor Lagoa Henriques, in the making of this sculpture, to obtain a deeper understanding of his artistic production methodology and enable additional data collection for future Conservation and Restoration interventions. In order to obtain a better understanding of this subject, the technologies of Sculpture at the level of the classical procedure are addressed. The processes and methods described apply to the construction of a sculpture of molten metal in rounded shape. Some of the key steps in the implementation of sculptural work are presented in a systematic way, such as modeling, casting, the scale modification techniques, melting technology and patination as surface finishing. This paper highlights the contribution of studying sculpture artistic production to Conservation and Restoration: the deep understanding of the used artistic production methods allows retrieving associate information regarding Conservation and Restoration interventions within the spirit of the artwork
